Why Scala Customers Look at MediaTile
Six reasons Scala customers are comparing their options
Scala has been a dependable platform for many networks. Here are the reasons Scala customers are taking a fresh look.
Buy direct from the publisher
Scala is sold only through certified partners, according to Scala. With MediaTile you buy from, and work directly with, the company that writes the software.
A North American company
Scala is owned by Vertiseit AB of Sweden. MediaTile is designed, built, sold and supported by our own North American team, with your content stored in Canada or the US.
Your licensing model is changing anyway
Scala has announced "a gradual transition from traditional perpetual licensing toward a true SaaS offering". If your licensing is moving, you can choose where it lands.
Retire the Content Manager server
Scala Content Manager runs on Windows Server with Java, Tomcat and a PostgreSQL or SQL Server database (Scala requirements). MediaTile is cloud software: nothing to host.
Keep your players, and choose more
MediaTile supports every 64-bit player operating system Scala Enterprise supports, plus Android, Samsung Tizen, LG webOS and BrightSign.
Cloud simplicity, local data
MediaTile players can show data from sources on your local network and intranet as well as from the cloud, so moving off a local server does not mean losing local content.
Why MediaTile
A Scala alternative every stakeholder can sign off on
MediaTile is one platform on one codebase, designed, built and supported by our own in-house team for 25 years. Because we build everything ourselves, we can rapidly develop the integration a large network needs.
For IT and Security
- No server to host or patch. Cloud software on AWS; players connect outbound only, with no inbound firewall ports.
- SOC 2 Type II, no exceptions, with the report and bridge letter available under NDA.
- SAML 2.0 single sign-on with enforced MFA, passkeys and a full audit trail.
- Content stored in your region, Canada or the US, on AWS.
For Communications
- Unlimited playlists, targeted your way. Target by location, tag or schedule, or use Player Location-Based Playlists (Enterprise) so one playlist with location placeholders serves many locations.
- Optional approval before playlists go live. Changed playlists automatically return for re-approval.
- Layout Designer for animated layouts, plus AI Widgets for AI-generated content (Enterprise).
- Emergency alerts from official CAP feeds, targeted by location and translated into 22+ languages (Enterprise).
For Operations
- Keep your Scala players and switch them over remotely wherever you grant access.
- Management API to approve players and assign playlists to whole groups at once.
- Player status in your dashboard and email alerts to your own technicians.
- Tile AI flags problems early such as disk space, version drift and offline patterns (Enterprise).
Protect Your Hardware Investment
Keep the players you run Scala on today
MediaTile supports every 64-bit player operating system Scala Enterprise supports. Where you grant remote access, we switch your existing Windows and Linux players to MediaTile remotely. Scala's own knowledge base marks its Scala-branded players as discontinued (Scala), so software that runs on standard hardware keeps your options open.
- 64-bit Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSB and LTSC
- 64-bit Windows 11
- 64-bit Linux on x86, including Ubuntu
- 64-bit Linux on ARM
- Android players
- Samsung Tizen 4 and newer displays
- LG webOS displays
- BrightSign (OS 9.0 or later)
Simpler to Run
Simplify your implementation without losing local access
Move from a self-hosted server to cloud software while your players keep working with the data on your own network.
Nothing to host
No Content Manager server, database or Windows Server to maintain. MediaTile runs on AWS across multiple availability zones.
Local and external data
Players can display intranet pages and data from your local network, as well as cloud and external sources.
Pull-only security
Every connection, including real-time commands, is initiated by the player. No inbound firewall ports.
Offline resilience
Players keep playing from local storage if the network drops.
Playlists Your Way
The right content at every location
Create as many playlists as you need and group your players by location or any criteria you choose. Target content by tag with tag-based playlists or by time with Smart Scheduling. For campaigns that run across many locations, Player Location-Based Playlists (Enterprise) add a convenient option: one playlist with location placeholders.
- Unlimited playlists. Create and schedule as many as your network needs.
- Targeting your way by location, tag, player group or schedule.
- Optional Player Location-Based Playlists (Enterprise). Location placeholders let one playlist carry shared content everywhere, plus content that plays only at the locations you assign.

New in MediaTile V9
Enterprise controls built into MediaTile V9
MediaTile V9 has shipped 15 releases since May 2026, with general availability in June. These are the capabilities enterprise teams ask about most.
Tile AI fleet triage
Continuous anomaly triage across every player, watching disk space, version drift, playable content, sync errors, offline patterns and recovery state. When you ask Tile AI to take an action, its reply ends with an Action Ledger of what actually happened. Enterprise plan.
Management API for bulk rollout
Approve waiting players and assign playlists to individual players or whole groups through the API, so large deployments do not mean clicking through hundreds of screens.
Approval workflow
Playlists are flagged for re-approval whenever their content changes. Unpublished changes are clearly marked, and manual publishes are recorded in the audit log.
Version history and rollback
Compare and roll back versions in the Layout Designer, Smart Lists and AI widgets.
Soft delete and restore
Deleted items stop playing immediately but can be restored within a configurable retention window, 30 days by default.
Event triggers
Run actions automatically when data conditions change, an API check fires or an alert arrives, with optional date, time and weekday windows.
Emergency alerts
Official CAP feeds, per-location targeting with on/off controls, automatic translation into 22+ languages, and the most severe active alert takes priority. Enterprise plan.
Account security
SAML 2.0 single sign-on, passkeys, MFA you can require account-wide, password policies and automatic lockout of inactive accounts.
Network connectivity test
Check ping, WebRTC, upload and download performance against player devices from a web browser, for pre-deployment validation and remote-site triage.
AI Widgets
AI Content, AI Weather, AI Data and AI Embed. Describe what you need and AI Content creates it, ready to place in your layouts, with version history built in. Enterprise plan.
Layout Designer with animation
Build layouts, including multi-zone layouts, and bring them to life with a range of animations, using assets from your MediaTile library.
Bring your own assets
Create assets in the design tools your team already uses, or in Canva, and bring them into the MediaTile library for use in any layout.
Also included: Smart Scheduling and calendar scheduling, Express View for quick assignments and temporary overrides, Quick Broadcast, no-content detection, synced displays and video walls, live data from Sheets, Excel, CSV and SFTP, programmatic advertising with Hivestack and Vistar, two years of proof of play and WayMapper wayfinding (WCAG 2.2 Level AA).

Common Questions
Frequently asked questions: MediaTile as a Scala alternative
Is Scala digital signage end of life?
No end-of-life date has been announced for Scala Enterprise. Scala has announced "a gradual transition from traditional perpetual licensing toward a true SaaS offering", which is why many customers are using this moment to compare their options.
Who owns Scala?
Scala is owned by Vertiseit AB of Sweden. MediaTile is designed, built, sold and supported by our own North American team.
Can we buy MediaTile directly?
Yes. You buy from, and work directly with, the company that writes MediaTile. Scala is sold only through certified Scala partners, according to Scala.
Can we keep our Scala players?
Yes, on 64-bit players. MediaTile supports every 64-bit player operating system Scala Enterprise supports: Windows 10 IoT Enterprise, Windows 11 and Linux on x86 and ARM. Where you grant remote access, we switch your players to MediaTile remotely.
Can MediaTile import our Scala Designer and Content Manager content?
Your images and videos move across. Scala Designer templates, scripts and schedules are specific to Scala and are rebuilt in MediaTile, and on the Enterprise plan Tile AI can build groups and playlists from a prompt, an image or a document such as a schedule export.
Do we still need a server?
No. MediaTile is cloud software on AWS, so there is no Content Manager server, database or Windows Server to maintain.
Can our players still show local intranet and network data?
Yes. MediaTile players can display intranet pages and data from sources on your local network, as well as cloud and external sources.
How long does it take to switch from Scala?
Your free migration assessment gives you a written plan and timeline for your network. Where you grant remote access, we switch your players for you, in groups at your pace, and they keep playing until they switch.
Is MediaTile a good fit for airports and transit?
Yes. MediaTile runs interactive kiosks across both terminals at Toronto Pearson Airport, with WayMapper wayfinding that conforms to WCAG 2.2 Level AA, emergency alerts on the Enterprise plan, synced displays and live data.
Is MediaTile secure enough for our IT team?
Corum Digital Corporation, MediaTile's parent, holds a SOC 2 Type II report (Security) with an unqualified opinion and no exceptions, available under NDA with a bridge letter. Data is encrypted with AES-256 at rest and TLS 1.2 or higher in transit, and independent penetration testing found no critical or high-risk issues. Players connect outbound only, so no inbound firewall ports are needed.
Where is our data stored?
On AWS. Your content is stored in the region that matches your organization: Canada Central for Canadian customers and US East for US customers. Account management and some metadata may be processed in either region. If you enable optional integrations or AI features, some processing may take place outside your home country, and AI can be switched off.
Do we need a separate playlist for every location?
Not unless you want one. You can create as many playlists as you need and target them by location, tag, player group or schedule. When one campaign runs across many locations, Player Location-Based Playlists on the Enterprise plan let a single playlist use location placeholders, so shared content plays everywhere and local content plays only where you assign it. That saves maintaining near-identical copies.
How is MediaTile priced?
MediaTile Enterprise is one annual subscription per display, with hosting, updates, remote management, Samsung display controls, remote support, unlimited training, unlimited users and unlimited storage included, and no setup fees. Contact us for a quote built around your network.
What support do enterprise customers get?
MediaTile is built and supported by our own in-house team. Enterprise customers reach a live support agent, and remote support and unlimited training are included with your subscription, during migration and after.
Is MediaTile available in French?
Yes. The MediaTile interface is available in English and French.
