About the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum (IMSM) is a non-profit, automotive racing museum that celebrates the history of its iconic namesake race track. With over 100 years of racing history, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway has seen its share of innovation and of course, the evolution of race cars themselves. IMSM’s mission is to preserve and share one of the premier collections of automotive and motor racing vehicles and artifacts, with a special emphasis on the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race. A tall order indeed, yet one that they do very successfully.

The Challenge

The sport of racing is all about speed and the collection of winning cars at the museum is extensive and impressive.  However, while the IMS Museum is dedicated to motor racing and speed, nothing on display actually moved. Dave Wilson, Director of Development and Partnerships at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Foundation said that they wanted to “bring the cars to life”. Dave wanted to show these legendary vehicles in action, in their prime and give visitors a real feel for what racing around a 2.5-mile oval track in 39 seconds looked and felt like. He knew that the museum had miles of old film footage taken over the years and he wanted to take advantage of that precious resource and share it with visitors in a very dynamic and interactive way.

The Solution

Working with Corum Digital, Mr. Wilson decided that the best way to deliver interactive footage to visitors was to deploy touch enabled, interactive kiosks powered by Corum Digital’s MediaTile Content Management System (CMS). Given that the museum hosts thousands of guests of a varying demographic, the kiosks had to be able to withstand the regular wear and tear of hundreds of interactions a day. Based on the overall strength of the solution, the Foundation approved funding for the visitor interactive project and for the conversion of the archival footage into digital format, so they could be shared on the interactive kiosks and be preserved for future generations.

The Result

Since the initial launch, 10 kiosks have been successfully deployed throughout the museum. Visitors can interactively navigate through the history of some of the legendary cars on display and launch videos of the race cars in their prime. Visitors experience the sights and sounds of these amazing vintage vehicles with a simple tap of the display. One of the exhibits allows patrons to hear and compare what various classic engines sounded like. With decades of archival footage available and the interactive nature of the kiosks combined with the MediaTile CMS, the museum is easily able to continue creating new and exciting experiences for their patrons.

Ultimately, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum's use of the MediaTile CMS offering has allowed them to “bring the cars to life” by creating an immersive, educational and dynamic experience.
